With three RTP grants, we built Thunderstruck, a signature 3.1 mile long trail that descends over 1,100’ through some of the rockiest terrain on the east coast. We did this by hand building half of the trail with the assistance of the Appalachain Conservation Corps. We also built an amazing skills park, a beginner jump trail, and the start of a climb to the top of the mountain... over 6 miles of new trail for all ability levels.

In 2004, the Coal River was listed as one of the ten most endangered rivers in the country. Partly because of the river’s listing, the Coal River Group was formed.

Lu Schrader founded the the West Virginia Trails Coalition and was a key player in the first WV Statewide Trail Plan. Lu was also the driving force behind the creation of the Trace Fork Canyon Trail near Charleston.

McTrail is managed by Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission and is highlighted by a 1,200 ft lighted tunnel. It runs 2.2 miles from Fairmont, WV to Prickett’s Fort State Park.
